Malta – Have you seen its beauty?

Malta – Have you seen its beauty?

Less than 3 days in Malta. Not much, but quite enough to fall in love with the archipelago. You have to see Malta, at least in photos. These are the things that have moved my traveller’s heart in a special way.

Architecture for Fans

Those who love interesting architecture and perhaps also like photography or painting, will find their paradise here. I’ll make the pictures speak. Enlarge the photos of a picture gallery by clicking on a single item.

There are oriels in many coulors on Malta.

The Festas, religious holidays in Malta are legendary. Then you can see historical flags with emblems on roofs of many (fortress) towns. Saints are placed everywhere. It’s an impressive and unique view. Due to the colorfulness and intense religiosity this reminded me in a way of Hindu celebrations, though being a world apart. I found this really exotic about Malta. Since we happened to be there at Assumption, we experienced the special deco in all its glory.

Malta is full of forts. The cores of some some cities are located therein. The fortified towns have a special atmosphere. A walk through the dark narrow streets of silent Mdina (“The silent city”) and a swimming area directly located in the tiny UNSESCO World Heritage capital Valletta, have engaged my eyes. Lose yourself in different cities of Malta and Gozo in a variety of stairs and alleys! You will always have a fantastic view down. The cities also offer valuable shade in the heat of summer.

No wonder that Malta is used as film set. If you are interested in the topic of Malta as a film location I recommend this excellent researched article.

On housed there are many details that are known from the British Isles. They mingle with the Maltese passion for Catholicism. The result is a very unique fascinating mix. Here is a photo gallery about architectural details of Malta.

Delicious food in Malta and Gozo

This point has surprised me the most. Since I do not eat meat, I had expected that I would face a problem in the predominantly conservative Malta. Firstly, I found great vegetarian dishes in the traditional places, for example,at  the restaurant “To-Rikkardu”, located in a narrow street of the fortress of Gozo’s capital, Victoria. This place is impressive not only because of its traditional interior, but also because of the high quality food. They use local produce, often from their own farm. The traditional Maltese platter with delicious cheese and olives made me really happy.

Another nice trip, which also turned out to be a food trip, led us to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. This place at Malta’s southern coast with its multicolored Luzzus (typical Maltese fishing boats) is a real photographers village. You will inevitably find Marsaxlokk on Malta travel guides, so as a cover photo ìn this article. Although frequented by tourists, it has retained its original charms of a cozy fishing village.

I had read in the travel guide that you should eat seafood in Marsxlokk. Nevertheless, I had not expected that it would be so good and fresh. Maybe it was the freshest seafood I’ve ever had. The Sicilian style platter was not only tasty, but also looked very appealing.

In general, a lively restaurant scene has been developing in Malta for several years.

The fact that Valletta will be the European Capital of Culture in 2018, is promoting this trend again.

Last but not least Gozo, Malta’s little sister island, has its own craft beer. “Lord Chambray” is very tasty and makes a good photo surrounded by the red sand of Gozo’s picturesque beach San Blas Bay.

Rocks and crystal clear water

An extended road trip on Gozo left me with the most stunning images in mind. It’s an indescribable feeling, when you jump into this wonderful water in the heat. And those great waters are in every corner.

This is so far my favorite place on the Maltese Islands:

A quick dip after a hike or a walk in the beautiful surroundings of a cliff is to die for.

You can feel space more on Gozo than on the densley populated Malta.

If you make a trip to Malta, you should definitely also visit Gozo. The combination will make your trip perfect.
